handloomingOne of the earliest crafts used by humans to produce clothing has a long tradition in the island nation of Sri Lanka. Today’s handloom cottage industry is not as vibrant as the ancient times as modern technology and machine-made clothing is quicker and cheaper, yet it is hard to beat the vibrant colors of woven cotton on a loom worked only by the hands of artists. Woven cloth—saris, sarongs, and lungis—are traditional clothing worn by many Sri Lankans, even as stitched clothing have also found a place in today’s world. Today’s revived handloom cloth is bold and colorful and attracts a new generation of wearers and designers to incorporate them into their designs. Handloom is not restricted just to clothing, but one can find tapestry and other uses for household furnishings and accessories such as bags.
